COVID-19: New cases jump to 260 today, highest since 4th June

Malaysia has recorded a significant jump of new COVID-19 cases with 260 new infections reported today. This brings the total number of infections to 11,484. There are no new deaths today and the death toll remains at 136.

The Ministry of Health has reported 47 new recoveries and a total of 10,014 patients have recovered and discharged so far. The recovery rate is currently 87.20% while the mortality rate is at 1.18%.

There are now 1,334 active COVID-19 cases remaining which are currently receiving treatment. 20 patients are in ICU while 3 require respiratory support.

Out of the 260 new COVID-19 cases reported today, there’s one imported case from the United Kingdom and 259 local infections. Sabah has the most number of cases at 118, followed by Kedah with 98 cases, Kuala Lumpur with 14 cases and Selangor with 13 cases.

31 of the new cases reported today have a recent travel history to Sabah. This includes 12 cases in Kuala Lumpur, 9 cases in Selangor, 2 each in Terengganu and Perlis, and 1 case each in Kedah, Pahang, Pulau Pinang, Melaka, Johor and Putrajaya. Since 20th September, there are 119 cases involving people that returned from Sabah.

The Ministry has reported 4 new clusters, namely Bah Ketil cluster in Langkawi with 4 cases, Joo Hwa cluster in Tawau, Sabah with 1 case, Selasih cluster in Putrajaya with 5 cases and Jalan Meru cluster in Klang with 3 cases.

Bulk of the new cases are from the new Tembok cluster in Kedah which has 88 new cases. In Sabah, there are 74 new cases from the Laut cluster and 10 new cases each for both Benteng and Bangau-bangau cluster. In Kuala Lumpur, 12 out of 13 cases are individuals that have recently returned from Sabah.

The Ministry of Health has expressed concern as this is the 2nd highest daily count for new COVID-19 cases in Malaysia. The highest recorded was on the 4th of June with 277 cases and 271 of them were foreigners.
