Xiaomi Mi 10T series: A worthy successor?

Everyone loves a good bang-for-buck smartphone, but when that device is also a proper flagship device, well that’s often known on the streets as the good stuff. Today, Xiaomi pulls the covers of their brand new Xiaomi Mi 10T series, the successor to the highly popular Mi 9T, and there are three devices this time: the Mi 10T, Mi 10T Pro and Mi 10T Lite.

Mi 10T & Mi 10T Pro

Let’s start with the main duo of the Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro. Although there’s a Pro moniker between the two devices, there isn’t a whole lot that separates them.

For starters, both smartphones are powered by a top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 5G processor. But, there is some variation when it comes to memory configuration. The Mi 10T can be configured to feature 6GB or 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. On the other hand, you can get 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage with the Mi 10T Pro.

Besides that, both smartphones will feature the same 6.67″ Full HD+ LCD display with a fast refresh rate of 144Hz. The panel also features a tiny punch hole at the top left corner that houses the 20MP selfie shooter. This display also features Xiaomi’s new AdaptiveSync technology. This allows the screen to adapt its refresh rate to what’s being shown on screen. With it, you’ll be able to see improved battery performance as well as less screen tearing. Protecting it is Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 (which you will also find on the back and over the camera module).

Keeping the lights for both devices is a generous 5,000 mAh battery with support for 33W fast-charging via a USB-C port. Xiaomi says that this smartphone also features something called Middle Middle Tab (MMT) charging technology. With this, you can experience up to 17% faster charging and longer battery lifespan.

Both devices also have side mounted fingerprint scanners, dual SIM support (with “more 5G bands than ever) and also stereo speakers plus an IR blaster.

The biggest difference, and the one that earns one of them the Pro badge, lies in the camera. On the Mi 10T, you’re getting a triple camera setup with a 64MP wide angle main camera, a 13MP ultra-wide camera and a 5MP macro camera. However, on the Mi 10T Pro, that main sensor gets upgraded to a 108MP main sensor instead. How much this will affect image quality remains to be seen, but on paper it definitely looks like an upgrade.

Xiaomi also talks a lot about the Mi 10T Pro’s long exposure camera features. They’ve added six different long exposure modes to the smartphone that includes Light Painting, Star Trails, Neon Trails, Moving Crowd, Starry Sky and Oil Painting. But, these aren’t really new features as you could already do this on Huawei smartphones for a couple of years now.

There are also other AI features like AI Skyscaping which can add dynamic skies into your images, Photo Clone, which can put up to four “clones” of you into a photo, and Video Clones which does a similar thing as Photo Clones but in videos this time. Oh, and there’s something called Dual Video that lets you shoot with both front and rear cameras, much like Nokia’s Bothie feature.

Mi 10T Pro will also come with an anti-bacterial case and screen protector included.

Mi 10T Lite

Also launched today is the “everyone” smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite. This is the first smartphone to be powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 750G 5G processor. Xiaomi says that this is a powerful processor that can clock AnTuTu scores of over 330,000. Mi 10T Lite can also be configured with 6GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of internal storage.

The Mi 10T Lite also features a quad camera setup at the back, with a 64MP main camera, with almost all the same AI features as the Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro. That main camera is supported by an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. Up front, you’ll find a 16MP selfie shooter living in the tiny punch hole in the screen.

Keeping the lights on is a 4,820 mAh battery with support for 33W fast-charging via a USB-C port. Xiaomi says that this battery can give you up to two days of “normal use” and can also fully charge in just 59 minutes.

Up front, you’ll find a 6.67″ display with a refresh rate of 120Hz that also features the same AdaptiveSync technology. This LCD panel pushes a resolution of 2400×1080 pixels (FHD+) and is also protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5.

For now there’s no information on how much the Mi 10T series will retail for in Malaysia, but the smartphone will launch locally on the 6th of October so stay tuned for that.
