Extended Moratorium? PM to make an announcement at 2.30pm today

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will be addressing the nation this afternoon through a live broadcast. He is expected to reveal new measures to provide additional relief to aid Malaysians and businesses affected by the current COVID-19 pandemic.

You can watch the announcement at 2.30pm this afternoon (23rd September) across multiple platforms including RTMBernama TVTV3 and Astro Awani. In case you miss it, there will be a replay at 9.00pm this evening.

Malaysia has been placed under the Movement Control Order for 190 days and the pandemic has affected the livelihood of many Malaysians. The current loan moratorium will end on the 30th of September and this means all loan repayments will resume starting next month. Two months ago, the Prime Minister has announced the extended loan moratorium for targeted individuals and there’s a possibility of a further extension to be announced this afternoon.

On top of that, the government may introduce additional aid to assist affected SMEs and this may include an extension to the wage subsidy programme. The current Recovery Movement Control order is currently scheduled to end on the 31st of December 2020.

Dewan Negara has also approved a Temporary Measures for Reducing the Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) bill yesterday. Some of the amendments include increasing the debt threshold from RM50,000 to RM100,000.
