Android users can now edit Microsoft Office documents with the Google Docs app

Working from home is becoming a more common thing, so productivity apps like Google Docs are being updated to accommodate to it. Now, Android users are able to edit Microsoft Office documents with the Docs app.

With the new update, you can now enjoy these features on the Google Docs app:

  • Edit, comment, and collaborate on Microsoft Office files using Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
• Improved sharing options, sharing controls
  • Reduces the need to download and email file attachments
  • Reduces the need to convert file types

Previously, the features could only be utilised through Smart Compose—which both iOS and Android can access through the web. It will replace QuickOffice, which has more limited functionality and collaboration capabilities.

You won’t need to enable anything to access the features, as it will be on by default. However, to use the feature you have to make sure your Google Drive app is up to date. It is available to all G Suite customers and users with personal Google Accounts.

iOS users won’t be getting these features anytime soon, most likely due to Microsoft Office being more Android-friendly. The Google Docs app (iOS, Android) also previously made dark themes available to Android users.
