Huawei has announced two new laptops: the MateBook X and MateBook 14 during its annual developer conference where it also unveiled the new Watch GT 2 Pro and FreeBuds Pro. The MateBook X is Huawei’s new premium laptop that’s approximately 25% lighter than the MateBook X Pro.
Huawei will debut the two new MateBooks in China first before rolling it out to other markets globally.
The MateBook X features a 13″ 3K (3000 x 2000) touch display with a 100% sRGB colour gamut coverage and 400 nits of brightness. It boasts a 90% screen-to-body ratio and rocks a 3:2 aspect ratio.
According to Huawei, the laptop features a new fan-less design that relies on the combination of a vapour chamber, multiple graphite layers and a thermally-conductive hinge to keep the internals cool.
Physically, the MateBook X is made of magnesium aluminium alloy and has a thickness of just 13.6mm and weighs 1kg. Huawei boasts the laptop is smaller than a piece of A4 paper.
In case you were wondering, the MateBook X sits below Huawei’s flagship MateBook X Pro. Spec-wise, the laptop can be configured with up to a 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10510U CPU, up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD. For graphics, the MateBook X features Intel UHD graphics. This is also Huawei’s first laptop to support the new faster WiFi 6 standard.
The laptop has a full-sized keyboard that stretches from edge to edge. It offers 1.3mm of key travel and is fully backlit. Unlike the MateBook X Pro, there is no space left on the sides, so Huawei tucked the speakers underneath the keyboard.
Huawei has also included a new touchpad on the laptop that is said to be 26% larger than its predecessor. Interestingly, the trackpad is said to support full haptic feedback, using a feature called Free Touch, which is said to be similar to Apple’s Force Touch feature for its MacBook notebooks. Underneath the trackpad is an NFC tag that enables Huawei or Honor smartphones running on EMUI 10 to seamlessly transfer files to the laptop.
The power button also has a built-in fingerprint reader to enable users to the convenience of logging into Windows with just a tap of their finger. The new MateBook X also has the same recessed 720p HD webcam hidden under one of the keys like Huawei’s other MateBooks. Users also get dual microphones at the front edge of the laptop to better pick up your voice during conference calls.
In terms of ports, the MateBook X has a pair of USB-C ports (placed on both sides of the laptop) and a 3.5mm headphone back. The laptop can even be recharged with both USB-C ports via a 65W USB-C adapter.
According to Huawei, the MateBook X carries a 42Wh battery that is rated to offer up to 9 hours of Full HD playback on a single charge. According to Huawei’s website, the MateBook X comes in two colours which include: Silver, Green. The laptop is slated to come with Windows 10 Home Edition.
Not to be outdone by the MateBook X, Huawei has also given the MateBook 14 a big update this year with the option to max it out with an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H CPU with a Radeon RX Vega 7 GPU, 16GB of RAM and 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD.
As its name implies, the MateBook 14 has a larger 14″ screen compared to the MateBook X. The display also has a 3:2 aspect ratio and supports multi-touch. The main difference is that the display maxes out at a 2160 x 1440p resolution instead of 3K. It has a maximum brightness of 300 nits and offers a 100% sRGB colour gamut.
The new MateBook 14 sports an aluminium alloy body and is also thicker at 15.9mm and slightly heavier than the MateBook X, weighing approximately 1.49kg. One benefit of bigger is the laptop is able to accommodate a larger selection of ports with two USB-A ports, one HDMI port, one USB-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The MateBook 14 also has a full-size backlit keyboard. It also has a fingerprint reader integrated with the power button and the touchpad has a built-in Huawei Share tag underneath it. Like the MateBook X, it has a 720p HD web camera hidden beneath one of the keys.
Huawei says it has included a larger 56Wh battery with the laptop that it claims to offer up to 10 hours of continuous 1080p video playback. Unlike the MateBook X, Huawei only offers the MateBook 14 in grey. The laptop will also come with Windows 10 Home Edition.
For now, Huawei has only announced the pricing of the European variants of the MateBook X and MateBook 14.
