Realme 7 & 7 Pro: The Pro loses its 90Hz display

Almost six months later on the dot, we get a brand new pair of Realme smartphones from the range that the company pretty much built their brand on. These are the Realme 7 and Realme 7 Pro, but curiously, they decided to drop one of the more interesting value propositions from their Pro model.

Realme 7 Pro

The more capable Realme 7 Pro is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor which is the same as the one on the Realme 6 Pro. Inside, it’ll come with 6GB or 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 internal storage. Again, not much has changed here.

That said, the new device does come with a the company’s super-fast 65W SuperDart fast charging technology that you’d typically find on their more high-end models. It already packs a generous 4,500 mAh battery, but with this new fast-charging, Realme claims that you can fully charge this handset, via its USB-C port, in just 34 minutes.

Up front, however, comes the more curious change. This new Realme 7 Pro features a smaller 6.4″ AMOLED display that pushes a resolution of Full HD+ and a refresh rate of just 60Hz. That’s quite the departure from the 6.6″ 90Hz LCD panel that adorned its predecessor.

GSMArena reports that Realme says this is because of feedback from their fans. Apparently, more of them are interested in 60Hz AMOLED panels over 90Hz LCD panels, which I guess I can see the appeal of. You get more frugal battery usage and also AMOLED screens do look nicer on smartphones. That said, as someone who’s a big fan of the 90Hz refresh rate, I gotta say that this feels like a downgrade to me.

Realme also changed up the camera configuration on the Realme 7 Pro over its predecessor. Sure, it still has a quad camera setup, but the main sensor is now the newer 64MP Sony IMX682 unit instead. Realme also dropped the 12MP telephoto in favour of a 2MP depth sensor to be paired with the 2MP macro camera and 8MP ultra-wide. Up front, Realme also trades the dual-camera setup from the Realme 6 Pro for a single 32MP selfie shooter on the Realme 7 Pro.

One awesome upgrade, however, is that the smartphone now comes with a pair of stereo speakers on top of the Dolby Atmos that the Realme 6 Pro offered. What’s more, the phone also retains its 3.5mm headphone jack which makes it a compelling option for content consumption.

Realme 7

If you’re adamant about getting a fast refresh rate display, then the Realme 7 might be more your speed. It packs a 6.5″ Full HD+ LCD panel with a refresh rate of 90Hz. Inside, the device gets an upgraded MediaTek Helio G95 processor that’s mated to either 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

It also gets a bigger 5,000 mAh battery, but you don’t get the same fast charging as its Pro sibling. Instead, you’ll have to settle for a 30W fast charger, but that’s still pretty darn fast.

At the back, you’ll find the same quad-camera as the Realme 6 with the exception of the upgraded 64MP main shooter you’d find on the Realme 7 Pro. Up front, you also get a 16MP selfie shooter.

Besides that, the Realme 7 will feature a USB-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

India pricing

The Realme 7 series will go on sale in India in the following configurations:

  • Realme 7 (6GB + 64GB) – INR14,999 (~RM850)
  • Realme 7 (8GB + 128GB) – INR16,999 (~RM963)

  • Realme 7 Pro (8GB + 128GB) – INR21,999 (~RM1,246)

For now, there are no details yet on the Malaysian prices, but we’ll keep you updated as soon as we hear word.
