Pokemon Go to end support for older iPhones and Android 5 devices

In a Tweet, Pokemon Go (iOS, Android) announces of a new update coming soon in October. However, they also mentioned that they will end support on certain smartphones and operating systems—including older iPhones and devices that run on Android 5.

Specifically, phones running on Android 5, iOS 10, and iOS 11 will be affected. The list also includes iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 devices. Other devices that aren’t mentioned are not affected.

With their new update, the next version of Pokemon Go will have iOS 12 as a minimum requirement. But you won’t be able to play the game at all with iPhone 5s or iPhone 6.

Currently for iOS devices, Pokemon Go is compatible with iPhone 5s, SE, 6s, 6, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, and X devices with iOS version 9 or later installed. They also state that “earlier devices” like the 5th generation iPod Touch devices and the iPhone 5c are not compatible with the game.

As for Android devices, they are currently still compatible with “Android devices that have 2GB RAM or more and have Android Version 4.4–7.0+ installed”. However, it says that the game may not run on “certain devices even if they have compatible OS versions installed”.

If you’re an avid Pokemon Go player and you have devices that are still run with iOS 11 and below, make sure to update your device. Just make sure you’re running at least iPhone 6s and newer.

The update is very likely to do with the AR feature of Pokemon Go. The app already has an augmented reality feature that makes Pokemon look even more realistic. They’re probably phasing out devices that can’t deliver an optimal AR experience.
