Sony opens online registration for PS5 pre-orders, but it’s still missing two crucial details

Are you waiting to get your hands on the Sony PlayStation 5? So are we. But to this day Sony has not revealed the price nor the exact date the next-generation game console will be going on sale this year.

With just two to three months before the year-end holiday season, there isn’t much time left for Sony to confirm the PS5’s launch date. Now the makers of the PlayStation is calling on for die-hard fans to register online to stand a chance to be among the first to pre-order the console.

All you need to do is sign up he website and use the email address that is tied to your PlayStation Online ID. But Even if you do get an invitation to pre-order, you’re still not guaranteed a pre-order.

According to Sony’s FAQ, should you be selected, Sony will contact you via email before the pre-orders start. The reservation to pre-order will be taken on a first-come-first-serve basis, so you are encouraged to follow Sony’s instructions and act fast.

According to Sony, there will be a limited quantity of PS5 consoles available for pre-order this holiday season. So what does it take to be selected to receive an invitation? Cryptically, Sony said the selection is based on previous interest and PlayStation activities.

But what if you don’t reside in the U.S.? Well, Sony said so long as there are units still available the pre-order reservation is still valid but you will need to ship the console to a U.S. based address. Any orders that contain a non-U.S. based address will be cancelled.

Each invitation has a limited time and quantities are limited per PSN ID per transaction. Each pre-order customer is entitled to:

1 x PS 5 console or PS5 digital edition

2 DualSense wireless controllers

2 DualSense charging stations

2 Pulse 3D wireless headsets

2 Media remotes

2 HD cameras

Though its great to finally get some clarification on Sony’s pre-order strategy, it is still missing one crucial piece of information. The price of the PS5 and release date.

Frankly, at this point, it seems that Sony is just waiting for Microsoft to make the next move. Neither console maker seems eager to announce the price of their console first. Perhaps they are worried that the first out the gate would get undercut by the other.

This was in fact, the strategy Sony employed back in E3 1995 when it debuted the original PlayStation. Sony waited to go next after its rival Sega announced its Sega Saturn console would retail for USD 399 and upended their announcement by announcing the PlayStation would be priced at USD 299.

Although the chances to secure a pre-order for the PS5 is very slim, would you try registering for the chance to be among the first to pre-order a unit? Let us know in the comment section below.
