If you’re a regular at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, you’d have probably noticed a large dark orb under construction for at least the past couple of years. That orb will soon be Apple Marina Bay Sands, which will be the first Apple Store with a spherical design and the first perched on a body of water.
“This is one of Apple’s most significant stores. They’ve never tried anything like it before. An elevated boardwalk and underwater passage connect to pavilion to the shore and The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands,” tweeted Michael Steeber, creative editor and fan of Apple retail and design.
Twitter users have already posted the orb’s presence in Marina Bay. They apparently date back to 2018 while the store was still in construction.
When the store will be officially revealed, it will be a “glass orb” floating in the Bay waters. It is situated on the water off Marina Bay Sands that was previously occupied by mega nightclub Avalon from 2011 to 2016.
During the day, the orb’s glass panels reflect the towering skyline of the Downtown Core and motion of the rippling water. At night, the sphere glows at night and it looks like a traditional lantern.
“Apple Marina Bay Sands will be at the heart of creativity, a place we’ve made for you to capture your ideas and passions. It will be a space for you to explore, connect and create something new,” wrote Apple on their site.
The new store is not only the third Apple store to be opened in Singapore, but Apple’s 512th location worldwide—although they have yet to specify an opening date. Apple has also recently opened its largest Apple Store in Thailand that features a Tree Canopy roof design.
It also appears to be a standalone outdoor installation, like the Louis Vuitton store at Marina Bay. Apple’s two other stores include the store at Jewel Changi airport, which opened in July. The first Apple store in their country (and also in South East Asia), was opened in 2017 at Knightsbridge mall in Orchard Road.
