Xiaomi is turning 10 tomorrow and they are releasing a new special edition phone with top-end specs to celebrate the occasion. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has confirmed that the new device will be called the Mi 10 Ultra for global markets and Mi 10 Supreme Edition for its domestic market. Ahead of the global unveiling, several leaked photos of the new Mi 10 device reveals a massively upgraded quad-camera setup that offers up to 120X zoom.
The Mi 10 Ultra is expected to run on a Snapdragon 865+ chipset with possibly up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It is also speculated to come with a 120Hz AMOLED display which is a major upgrade over the current Mi 10 Pro that pushes a 90Hz refresh rate.
Based on the leaked images, it appears that the new Mi 10 Ultra would come with periscope telephoto camera that’s capable of pushing up to 120x zoom in digital. That’s higher than the 100X Space Zoom offered by the Galaxy S20 Ultra and 100X Max Zoom by the Huawei P40 Pro+.
If you look closer, the Ultra’s periscope telephoto lens comes with a distinctive silver bump. The label on the device indicates a focal length of 12-120mm and aperture between f/1.85 – f/4.1.
As a comparison, the P40 Pro+ with a 10x periscope telephoto camera has a focal length of 18mm to 240mm and an aperture between f/1.8 – f/4.0. If we compare the two, the Mi 10 Ultra would have a wider lens but its optical zoom range is shorter than Huawei’s top of the line flagship.
The current Mi 10 Pro uses a 108MP main camera, a 20MP ultrawide-angle lens and has two telephoto cameras. One of it is a 12MP portrait camera with 2x optical zoom while the other unit is a 8MP telephoto camera that does 10x hybrid zoom with OIS.
The images of the Mi 10 Ultra seems legit as a leaked picture of the case has also surfaced online. As seen here, the back of the case has a long cut-out for the camera module while the folio case has a see through panel on the top right corner.
So far there’s no pricing info but do expect it to be priced more than RM4,000 if it is released in Malaysia. The current Mi 10 Pro is officially priced at RM3,899 for its 8GB RAM + 256GB storage variant which puts it on par with most mainstream flagship phones. Xiaomi will reveal more details tomorrow.
