Snapchat will let you add music to your Snaps, kind of like TikTok

As Trump ‘vows‘ to ban the popular short-form video app TikTok in the U.S., American users would need a replacement platform to give them a similar feel. Luckily, Snapchat announced that it will soon let you add music to the videos you record, just like what you can do on TikTok.

Though the feature could result in Snapchat being as popular as TikTok, it seems like it isn’t being designed as a competitor. Unlike TikTok, there won’t be a feed of videos set to music, and there won’t be a way to see other videos featuring the same song.

Instead, a Snap spokesperson stated that it’s designed for sharing music with your “real friends”, which is Snap’s niche anyway. The music feature includes “a robust and curated catalogue of music” from Warner Music Group, Universal Music Publishing Group, Merlin, and more.

Snap is also designing this feature in a way that music labels might prefer—which is when you swipe up on a video, you’ll get the song’s title and artist, plus a link to listen to the track on your streaming platform of choice. TikTok offers a similar design but doesn’t necessarily give you the correct name for the track.

Snapchat plans to launch the music feature to English-language users this fall, but users in New Zealand and Australia are now able to use it. But if you’re still stuck on TikTok, the good news is that Microsoft is in talks with TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance and it might acquire the app and do “a complete security review and providing proper economic benefits to the United States, including the United States Treasury.” Trump has agreed to give ByteDance 45 days to negotiate the sale with Microsoft, meaning if it goes well it might not even be banned after all.
