COVID-19: New cases jump to 21 today, 16 are local transmissions

Malaysia has recorded double-digit figure for new COVID-19 cases with 21 new infections today. This brings the total number of positive cases in the country to 8,861. There are no new deaths reported and the death toll remains at 123.

The Ministry of Health has recorded 3 new recoveries and a total of 8,577 patients have recovered and discharged so far. The recovery rate is currently 96.79% while the mortality rate is 1.39%.

The number of active cases have increased to 161 and all are currently isolated and receiving treatment. 5 patients are in ICU and there are 2 that require respiratory support.

Out of the 21 new cases today, 5 are imported while the remaining 16 are transmitted locally. The imported cases include 3 Malaysians returning from Qatar, Australia and Singapore. There are also 2 foreigners, with one returning from Pakistan and another from a ALS Clivia container ship.

In terms of local cases, Sarawak reports the most cases with 8 new infections. This is followed by Pahang with 3 cases, Kuala Lumpur and Johor reporting two cases each, and 1 case in Selangor. 13 of the 16 local cases are Malaysians.

The curb further increase in new cases, the government has made it mandatory to wear face masks in public from 1st August 2020. This is applicable to all crowded public spaces and public transport.
