Lenovo ThinkStation P620: The world’s first workstation powered by AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper Pro

Lenovo has launched its new ThinkStation P620, a new workstation that promises more power, performance and flexibility in a single socket CPU platform. According to the company, the P620s is the first and only professional workstation to powered by AMD’s new Ryzen Threadripper Pro processor.

The story goes that the new processor was developed due to high demand from industry professionals that demanded high-performance processors that could handle heavily threaded applications and multitasking. What started as experimentation using consumer-grade AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors on professional workstations eventually resulted in the creation of the Threadripper Pro.

The new workstation’s processor is said to hold up to 64 cores and offers clock speeds up to 4.3GHz. It can be paired with up to 1TB of DDR4-3200 memory and 20TB of storage.

AMD’s new processor is said to allow the P620 to achieve a variety of productivity tasks from seamless 8K streaming in real-time, reduce render times, simulation solving and smooth interactivity with 3D assets without having to scale to a dual-socket system.

Lenovo said it built the P620 to be one of the most versatile workstations on the market. It is claimed to support for up to two NVIDIA Quadro RTX 8000 or four RTX 4000 graphics cards. The company also claimed the P620 is the only workstation with PCIe Gen 4, offering twice the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0. In addition, it has 6 PCI Express slots.

The advanced design of the processor also brings increased thermal requirements. Lenovo said it has taken this into consideration and included unique air-cooled solution. The company collaborated with AMD to create a custom-designed heat sink.

Designed to work within some of the most demanding professionally managed IT environments, Lenovo said the P620 comes with the company’s enterprise-grade features such as ThinkStation Diagnostics 2.0, ThinkShield support. This also includes upgrades to Premier support and a three-year warranty.

On top of this, AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro desktop processor comes with AMD Pro technologies including AMD Pro Security that adds in layers of built-in security technology to help protect sensitive data. It also has AMD Pro manageability for simplified deployment, imaging and management that is compatible with a company’s current IT infrastructure.

According to Lenovo, the P620 is set to benefit workers across multiple industries. This includes 3D artists and game developers as well as those who work in architecture, engineering and construction. Even users that work with Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality, stand to benefit from the P620’s power as it allows them to get even the most complex jobs done quicker.

In terms of ports, you can find two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 and a microphone headphone combo jack in the front. On the rear, you can find four USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 along with two USB-A 2.0 ports to connect all your devices. Besides that, other connectivity options include 10Gb Ethernet (RJ45) along with audio line-in and line-out and microphone-in ports.

Lenovo said the P620 can be configured to run up to Windows 10 Pro or Ubuntu Linux. At its max configuration, the P620 is stated to weigh 24kg.

Combined with the power of the new Threadripper Pro processor, the P620 reimagines the traditional workstation and fine-tunes it for multi-threaded applications. Lenovo said the ThinkStation P620 will be available in September 2020. For more information go to the official website
