Garmin Edge 130 Plus & Edge 1030 Plus: Everything you need to know

Malaysians are finally cycling again, with the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) lifting restrictions on certain activities. And for the avid cyclists out there, Garmin Malaysia is announcing two new GPS cycling computers: the Edge 130 Plus and the Edge 1030 Plus.

Both feature safety and tracking functionalities, along with various performance metrics and navigation technology. The idea, according to Garmin, is to “go beyond tracking” for both outdoor and indoor cyclists.

Sound interesting? Here’s everything you need to know.

Pricing and availability

Both models are now available at all Garmin authorised retailers, with pricing as follows:

Garmin Edge 130 Plus – RM999
Garmin Edge 1030 Plus – RM3,999

Specs and features

Both models work with the Garmin Connect app, while cyclists will also be able to sync their training data with other training apps such as TrainingPeaks and TrainerRoad, along with Strava. During workouts, Garmin’s cycling computers provide training insights such as VO2 Max and heart rate monitoring, and there’s also the ClimbPro feature to give riders an idea on the ascent and inclines of a course.

The Edge 130 Plus, the cheaper of the two models, still features GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo navigation support, along with a built in altimeter. There are also a few smart connectivity features, which basically means that certain notifications such as text messages will pop up on the display so that you won’t need to take out your smartphone.

Up to 12 hours of battery life is supported while using GPS, and if you’re using two sensors simultaneously, up to 10 hours of battery life is expected. You’ll be getting a 1.8″ non-colour display, with physical buttons to navigate through the UI.

Meanwhile, the Edge 1030 Plus is the “ultimate GPS cycling computer”, according to Garmin. Trail details from over 80 countries can be viewed on the device via the Trailforks app, while a feature called Forksight will display upcoming forks in cycling trails.

Again, you can monitor metrics such as VO2 Max, recovery time, training load, training focus, and more, along with daily workout suggestions. A significant upgrade for the more premium Edge 1030 Plus is the 3.5″ touchscreen display, one which Garmin promises should have no problems with gloves, or wet conditions.

What’s also interesting here is that the Garmin Edge 1030 Plus can also pair with a Tacx indoor trainer, which means that cyclists will be able to access the full range of features and tracking capabilities of the cycling computer—while using the Tacx trainers at home.

Up to 24 hours of battery life is promised by Garmin while using GPS, multiple paired sensors, as well as other connected features. Both models are compatible with Varia devices, which basically warn cyclists of oncoming traffic from the rear.
