Canon’s latest EOS R-series mirrorless cameras record up to 8K videos, priced from RM11,999

Canon Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd launched two new EOS R full-frame mirrorless cameras: the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6. Both cameras are aimed at advanced amateurs and professionals that demand high-quality and high-speed shooting.

The headline-grabbing features for the new EOS R cameras include the ability to record up to 8K videos at 30fps (frames per second). 

Features and specs 

The R5 is Canon’s highest-end mirrorless camera to date and its feature set certainly speaks for itself. Aesthetically, it is near-indistinguishable from a typical Canon full-frame DSLR. 

As mentioned earlier, it can record up to 8K RAW videos at 29.97fps as well as uncropped 4K DCI at 59.94fps. It has the ability to shoot in 8K allows videographers the flexibility to crop into the video during post-production and still retain a high-quality 4K video. This opens up more options for video editors to get creative with videos, allowing them to zoom or pan within the video and suffer no loss in quality.

Taking high-quality videos isn’t the only thing the R5 is good at. It boasts a 45MP sensor, with a native ISO range between 100 – 51,200. Canon claims the R5 is able to meet the high demands of professionals, allowing them to capture intricate details in landscape photography and even crop closer to see animals in wildlife photography. The company even said images are suitable for large format commercial printing. 

Apart from that, the R5 comes with an electronic viewfinder with a 120fps refresh rate and 5.76-million dot resolution as well as a 3.2” vari-angle touchscreen. 

If you are not a hardcore videographer and need a camera that shoots great stills, the R6 may be more suited for you. Not only does it have the same design as the more expensive R5, but it also comes with a 20MP full-frame sensor, that it inherits from Canon’s EOS-1DX Mark III, and has a native ISO of up to 102,400.

The R6’s video capabilities are nothing to scoff at either, it can record up to 4K at 60fps and slow-motion videos at 120fps in Full HD. The R6’s viewfinder resolution may not be as high as the R5, but it boasts 3.69 million dots. The camera’s touchscreen is also slightly smaller and lower-resolution at 3” and displays 1.62 million dots.

Despite their differences feature-wise, the R5 and R6 share a number of common features, this includes Canon’s Digic X image processor as well as its Dual Pixel CMOS AF III that covers 100% of the sensor’s AF area, offering 1,053 zones. Canon said this enables the cameras to easily focus on any part of the frame and makes focusing on subjects at the far edge of the frame easy. It also has an AF Priority mode that is able to eye-track animals as well as humans.

Both cameras are able to shoot up to 12fps with its mechanical shutter and up to 20fps with its electronic shutter, which is handy for landscape and wildlife photography. On top of that, it has in-body image stabilisation that Canon claims provide up to 8 stops of correction in tandem with Optical Image Stabilised lenses.

Control-wise, the two mirrorless cameras carry over the EOS 5D series’ Multi-controller and Quick Control Dial that allows photographers to quickly change settings and select AF points.

Besides the two new cameras, Canon also unveiled four RF-mount prime lenses that include the RF100 – 50mm f/4.5 – 7.1L IS USM, RF85mm f/ Macro IS STM, RF600mm f/11 IS STM and RF800mm f/11 IS STM. The company also introduced two new 1.4x and 2x extenders with the Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x. These are comparable with the 100-500mm zoom lens as well as the 600mm f/11 and 800mm f/11. 

Pricing and availability

According to Canon, the EOS R5 is officially priced in Malaysia at RM17,999 and will be available in August 2020. Meanwhile, the EOS R6 will carry a price tag of RM11,999 and is expected to make it to Malaysian stores come September 2020.
