Android users, you’re getting a new, dark theme on Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides

Dark mode (or theme) has been something that users have been requesting for a long time now. Whether it’s a system-wide theme, specific app dark modes, or UI colour schemes, users seemingly can’t get enough. All of which makes sense to an extent—besides potentially extending device battery life, dark themes just look amazing. Now, Android users will finally get a Dark theme for Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

According to an official statement from Google, the Docs, Sheets, and Slides apps on Android will feature a Dark theme that “intelligently” adjusts the colours of the UI to save battery life, as well as to improve visibility in low-light settings. This isn’t exactly a surprise, with the company already rolling out similar themes for some of their other native apps such as Google Photos and the Google app.

The update is being currently being rolled out to all users, although it may take longer than 15 days (from 6 July 2020) for end-users to get the update. Like many apps these days, the Dark theme will automatically kick in once you’ve changed your system settings to dark mode, although you can choose to individually turn off Dark theme for each app. Once a theme has been set, it will remain as such regardless of your system theme.

To enable it, you’ll need to head over to Menu > Settings > Theme > Dark within each app. To turn on system-wide settings, it depends on your device—however, it should be be a fairly straightforward process within your phone’s general settings.

At the moment, I’ve yet to receive the update on my Android device. However, with Google’s confirmation, we can expect to have dark mode on most of Google’s native apps on Android soon—which has certainly been a long time coming. Have you received the update? Are you team light theme or dark theme? Let us know in the comments section below.
