Report: iPhone 12 Pro might support 4K slo-mo at 240fps

The upcoming iPhone 12 Pro series is expected to come with a quad-camera setup which includes the additional LiDAR sensor. However, for those that use the iPhone for video recording, it appears that Apple is upping the ante with a new slo-mo mode in 4K resolution.

With the recent release of iOS 14 beta for developers, it was discovered in the codes by Max Weinback and his sources that Apple is introducing new video modes in 4K resolution. It is speculated that the new top of the line iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max could support 4K 120fps video recording natively and up to 240fps in slo-mo. If this is true, this would be an impressive showcase of the performance of the new A14 chip which is rumoured to be based on a 5nm process.

As a comparison, the current crop of iPhone models maxes out at 4K 60fps. If you want to shoot in slo-mo, it maxes out at 1080p at 240fps. When it comes to insane “high-speed” capture, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro is the first smartphone to offer an insane 7680fps ultra-slo-mo but it is limited to a much lower 720p resolution.

Apart from having a super high-frame-rate video recording, the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max are also speculated to feature a 120Hz ProMotion display for a more fluid response. This would put it on par if not better than other Android flagships that are now pushing screens with high refresh rates. It is also rumoured that Apple will go all-in with OLED across the range including the base model iPhone 12.

With the ongoing pandemic, the iPhone 12 launch is expected to be slightly delayed from its usual typical September period. For this year, there are 4 models expected including a new 5.4” device that could be smaller in dimensions than the new 2nd gen iPhone SE.
