Astro is making it easier for you to enjoy its TV channels and content at home without the need of installing a satellite dish or a set-top-box. The pay-TV provider has finally released its Astro TV app which you can install on your smart TV and personal devices.

At the moment, Astro TV app is currently in beta and they are inviting selected participants to try out the service. The beta program will run for two months and it will cost only RM1/month (RM1.06 inclusive of tax). For those who are not invited but want to try it out, you may submit your details over here.

With the Astro TV app, you can watch 43 channels and more than 10,000 video-on-demand content from their platform. You won’t be tied to a contract and Astro says you can choose to opt-out anytime you want.

Apart from watching Astro on your TV, you also get access to watch Astro channels across four devices via Astro Go. The app also offers “Play From Start” which allows you to watch TV shows from the beginning. You also get up to 200 hours of cloud recording on Astro Go.

The content provided under the Beta Programme includes Astro SuperSport HD channels, FOX Sports HD, HBO HD, Cinemax HD, Arena HD, AXN HD and Astro Ria HD. We are told that 4K content is not supported at the moment. Below is the full list of channels available:

At the moment, the Astro TV app is only supported for Sharp Smart TVs running on Android TV version 6.0 and above, and Sony Smart TVs that are running on Android TV version 7.0 and above. To install, all you’ll need to do is to search for Astro on the Google Play Store on your Android TV. You can view the list of supported models for both Sharp and Sony.

Unfortunately, Samsung Smart TVs are not supported yet. There’s no mention if it would work on Android TV boxes. According to the FAQ, they would recommend a minimum broadband speed of 10Mbps.

Alternatively, the Astro TV service is also available for mobile devices. It is accessible via the Astro Go app which is downloadable from the Apple App Store, Google PlayStore and Huawei AppGallery.

With this latest move, Astro is making its service more accessible and it is as easy as watching Netflix across your TV, smartphone and tablet. Without the extra hardware element, new customers can watch immediately and most people would be happy to know that they can cancel their subscription at any time since it isn’t tied to a contract.

For more info, you can check out the Astro TV App Beta programme page.
