After a long hiatus, HTC unveils its first 5G phone and it has a massive battery

HTC has been very quiet in the past year and the last remarkable smartphone to be released was the HTC U12+ back in 2018. Although they have been focusing more on its Vive VR products, the Taiwanese company has just announced two new mid-range smartphones. This includes the HTC U20 5G and the Desire 20 Pro.

HTC U20 5G

The HTC U20 5G is their very first 5G smartphone and it comes with a large screen and battery. It features a 6.8″ Full HD+ (2400×1080 pixels) punch-hole display and it runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G. The device is configured with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage which is still expandable via microSD.

Upfront, the device has a 32MP selfie-camera while the rear comes with a quad-camera setup. The U20 5G has a 48MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 2MP macro shooter and a 2MP camera for depth effects. It supports 4K video recording which comes with a Recording Video Stabilisation feature.

Unlike most modern smartphones that uses in-display or side-mounted fingerprint sensors, it still comes with a physical rear-mounted unit.

Powering the HTC U20 5G is a rather large 5,000mAh battery and it supports 18W QuickCharge 4.0 fast charging via USB-C. The Snapdragon 765 5G platform supports both SA and NSA networks but HTC’s first 5G phone doesn’t seem to support WiFi 6.

The spec sheet lists out n1, n3, n28, n41, n78 as its supported bands and it claims to support 5G download up to 2.52Gbps and uploads of up to 900Mbps. The device has NFC and supports Bluetooth 5.0. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with a headphone jack.

So far there’s no pricing for the U20 5G at the moment. According to HTC Malaysia, the device is currently available in Taiwan and its availability for other markets will be announced at a later date.

HTC Desire 20 Pro

HTC has also introduced the Desire 20 Pro which is a more affordable mid-range device that doesn’t support 5G. It comes with a smaller 6.5″ Full HD+ punch-hole display and it runs on a lower Snapdragon 665 processor mated to 6GB RAM. Onboard it has 128GB of storage which is also expandable via microSD.

In terms of design, it looks somewhat similar to the U20 5G as it retains a similar quad-camera setup along with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The back camera setup consists of a 48MP main camera, 8MP ultra-wide-angle shooter, a 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. For selfies, it settles for a lower resolution 25MP front camera that sits in a punch-hole on the top left corner of the screen.

The Desire 20 Pro also gets a generous 5,000mAh battery and it supports Quick Charge 3.0 fast-charging via USB-C. It also supports 5GHz 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and it still retains the 3.5mm headphone jack.
