The mobile gaming genre has grown exponentially in recent times—so much so that it is now considered a legitimate genre of eSports. That has been reflected int he gaming-centric devices that have been launched, including the BlackShark devices. But one of the most recognisable mobile gaming lines around is Asus’ ROG Phones, with the ROG Phone II sporting some serious tech.
The next model in the series is reportedly set to launch sometime in July 2020, and thanks to a TENAA listing, we now have an idea on what the Asus ROG Phone III will look like. Plus, we also have a couple of impressive specs to share.
Based on the images above, Asus’ next gaming smartphone won’t look too different from the others in the range. There’s a prominent ROG symbol on the back of the phone that lights up, along with a horizontal camera module on the back. Like many other gamer-centric phones, Asus has decided against a notch, hole-punch cutout, or pop-up selfie camera, opting instead for a larger forehead bezel on the front of the phone.
On the right of the device, you can also see the standard power button and volume rocker, and just like the previous ROG phone, you also have a second USB-C port on the left side of the device (in addition to the one on the bottom). However, a 3.5mm headphone jack is conspiciously missing, with the TENAA report saying that headphones will share a port with the charger. This, of course, means that you won’t be able to plug in standard headphones—which might be an issue, despite the prevalence of “low-latency” wireless headphones.
Up front, you’re looking at a 6.59″ FHD+ AMOLED display, along with an optical in-display fingeprint scanner for biometric unlock. The refresh rate isn’t specifically mentioned, but it’s safe to assume that we’ll be seeing the same 120Hz refresh rate on the Asus ROG Phone III’s display.
But a gaming phone is made (or broken) by the power of its internals, and Asus hasn’t disappointed. We could see an overclocked Snapdragon 865 under the hood, with the Prime core able to clock up to 3.091GHz. For memory, you’re getting 16GB of RAM, while storage options go up to 512GB. And to sustain those long, long hours of gaming, the ROG Phone III will feature a huge 6,000mAh battery whic hsupports 30W wired fast-charging.
Software should be a familiar experience for ROG Phone users, and we expect to see the phone run Android 10 at launch along with Asus’ ROG UI. This includes an X Mode, which is basically a special mode for gaming—we’re guessing that overclocking the chipset might have controls within this mode.
What do you think? An official release date hasn’t been specified, but coupling the rumours that Asus is set to launch the ROG Phone III next month and the TENAA listing, we should see the device hit shelves sooner rather than later.
