The Galaxy M41 could be the first Samsung phone NOT to use Samsung OLED displays

In case you didn’t already know, Samsung’s displays have been used by plenty of smartphone manufacturers over the years. This list includes OnePlus, Huawei, Xiaomi, and more, so it’s fair to say that Samsung Display has dominated the OLED display market for some time now. And of course, Samsung’s own smartphones use the same AMOLED displays—until now.

A new report from Sammobile claims that the upcoming entry-level Galaxy M41 will not feature an OLED display of their own for the first time. While purported renders of the device have surfaced prior to this, this new bit of information is perhaps the most interesting thing we know so far.

The report says that Samsung will be going with an OLED display panel from TCL’s China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT), although alternatives from BOE are still being considered. And if this is to be believed, the Samsung Galaxy M41 will be the first smartphone from Samsung to feature a third-party OLED display.

As for other details on the screen, the Galaxy M41 will reportedly have a 6.67″ FHD+ display with a resolution of 2340×1080 pixels and a 19:5:9 aspect ratio. This means that the M41’s display could look a lot like the one used by Xiaomi on the Mi 10, launched in April of this year.

While Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything as of yet, it’s safe to say that this spells the end of an era of sorts for Samsung. When talking a bout a Samsung smartphone—even a budget model—one of the highlights is usually the display. That said, it makes financial sense for Samsung to move towards panels from OEMs such as TCL and BOE, especially when you consider the highly-saturated nature of the low-end mobile market.

I don’t think this use of third party displays will extend to their flagship devices, however. So if you’re keeping an eye out for the next Galaxy Note or S30 (or S21?), we’re expecting to still see Samsung-made AMOLED displays on those devices.

As for the Galaxy M41, Samsung hasn’t confirmed an official release date at the time of writing. Based on leaked renders from notable leakster @OnLeaks, we could see a hole-punch cutout on the top left corner of the display, although he caveats this by saying it could be the M51 or M41.
