The government has announced that it has lifted restrictions on the permitted passenger capacity for various modes of transportation. According to Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, airlines are now allowed to operate at full capacity with pre-conditions.
Airlines must conduct temperature checks on all passengers and face masks are required at all times throughout the journey. The move is seen as a solution to reduce the prices of flight tickets especially for flights between West and East Malaysia.
It was reported that return flight tickets from Kuala Lumpur to Miri tickets could cost more than RM2,000 and this was due to reduced load factor in order to comply with social distancing regulations. Airlines were looking forward to the removal of social distancing rules so that they can carry more passengers which would allow them to price its tickets more competitively to cover the cost of operating the flight.
Other forms of public transportation such as bus, ferry, train and LRT are also permitted to operate with maximum capacity. For transport with standing passengers, those who are standing are urged to maintain a safe distance to avoid overcrowding. Similar to planes, all passengers must wear a face mask at all times and are told to bring their own hand sanitisers.
Meanwhile for e-hailing and taxis, drivers are now permitted to carry passengers up to its legal limits. Both drivers and passengers must also wear a mask at all times, and drivers are required to sanitise their vehicles before and after ferrying passengers, and after their work ends. Prior to this, eHailing providers such as Grab are only permitted to carry up to two passengers and operate until to 11pm.
The minister also added that eHailing, taxis and express busses are allowed to operate without time limit. He also said that all drivers and passengers are urged to download the MySejahtera app.
