Barber shops and hair salon can reopen from 8 June in Sarawak

Those residing in Sarawak will soon be able to get a haircut by a professional. The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has decided to allow barber shops and hair salons in the state to reopen from the 8th of June.

The announcement was made by SDMC chairman, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and he added that it is restricted to hair-cutting services only. Other services such as facial and head massages are prohibited.

The actual SOP for barber shops and hair salons will be provided soon. The chairman added that barbers and hair salons must ensure minimum contact and be vigilant about their health.

As of 4th June 2020, Sarawak has recorded zero new cases for 8 consecutive days. Sarawak, which is the largest state in Malaysia has recorded 552 confirmed cases and 523 have recovered so far. It is reported that 46,059 people were tested for COVID-19 in the state.

Meanwhile, for Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, there’s no SOP yet for barbers and hair salons. On 1st June, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that the matter has not been in the council’s agenda and it has not yet been tabled for discussion. It was previously reported that the Ministry of Health is looking at fine-tuning the proposed SOP for barbers and hairstylists during the CMCO.

Just a few weeks after the MCO was introduced, Azmin Ali had included barbers and hair salon into a list of permitted sectors to open. After public outcry, the Prime Minister had ordered against the reopening.
