The upcoming Honor Play 4 will be able to measure your body temperature

Honor is set to release the Honor Play 4 series anyday now, and there will reportedly be two models available: the Honor Play 4 Pro and the Honor Play 4. The former has already been seen on a JD.com pre-sale listing, while the lower-end Honor Play 4 has been spotted on the Bluetooth SIG website.

Some details have already been revealed ahead of launch, with the Honor Play Product Manager revealing that the series will feature a Kirin 990 5G chipset, along with a quad camera setup for the regular Honor Play 4. Thanks to listings on TENAA and MIIT, we also know that the Pro version will have a 6.57″ Full HD+ display, along with a 4,200mAh battery for juice. Like other new smartphones from Honor and its parent company Huawei, we could also see 40W fast charging.

Meanwhile, we’re also expecting to see the “Pro” device featuring the popular hole-punch cutout for dual front-facing cameras, along with a dual 40MP + 8MP rear camera setup. In the images, you can see that there is a flash sitting within the rear camera module, along with an AI logo—and yes, it looks like it’s simply a logo, and nothing else.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many details on the Honor Play 4 (non-pro) available, although the Bluetooth listing reveals that there will be Bluetooth 5.1 support and we could see a 64MP main camera as part of a quad camera setup.

Body temperature sensor

As the world battles to curb the spread of COVID-19, various SOPs have been implemented at public places to flatten the curve of the pandemic. One of the most common preventative measures, of course, is to regularly measure body temperatures in public places such as restaurants and malls, or even at home.

With that in mind, the Product Manager from Honor Play has shared a post on Weibo detailing a new feature on the upcoming device: a temperature measurement function. According to Wei Xiaolong, the Honor Play 4 series will be able to measure the temperatures of humans, animals, and even objects—all of which appear to be very handy functions to have in a smartphone.

Temperature checks are reportedly done by using IR-based technology. In the past, we’ve seen IR sensors on smartphones, although they were primarily used for other features such as IR cameras, or even to use your smartphone as a remote control for IR devices. A bit of research online reveals that certain types of IR sensors can be used to measure temperatures with no contact, which could be ideal in light of current affairs.

The Honor Play 4 Pro is already available on JD.com for pre-orders, although there isn’t a mirrored listing for the regular Play 4—shipping for the Pro model will begin on the 10th of June 2020. The series will be officially launched on the 3rd of June 2020, as announced by Honor on its official Weibo page.
