Occasionally, smartphone manufacturers will partner with an automotive or design company to introduce a special edition device. Huawei has Porsche Design, Oppo had worked with Lamborghini and OnePlus has McLaren.
When OnePlus was dropped from McLaren’s 2020 F1 partner list, it was speculated that we won’t be seeing a special edition OnePlus 8 Pro with McLaren’s signature papaya orange colour. Turns out the partnership between OnePlus and McLaren has come to an end and it was confirmed by the British supercar maker.
Below is a statement from McLaren that was shared with Android Authority:
Our partnership with OnePlus, which came to its scheduled conclusion recently, has been a highly successful collaboration between two iconic and innovative brands. Since the start of this partnership in 2018, OnePlus has been a supportive, valued partner and we wish them well and hope to see them in the future.
The final collaboration between the two brands was a concept smartphone that’s called the OnePlus Concept One. It was introduced at CES 2020 and it came with a flush triple-camera camera module that’s hidden by an electrochromic glass.
This is essentially a similar sunroof tech that’s used on the McLaren 720S. The feature also works as an ND filter for the camera which is great when shooting under harsh lighting.
During the partnership, they had released two commercial devices. The OnePlus 7T Pro and the OnePlus 6T McLaren edition. You can check out our unboxing of the OnePlus 6T McLaren below:
The latest OnePlus 8 Pro is one of the best flagship smartphone options available right now but it’s sad that we won’t be getting a McLaren edition. The device is equipped with a 120Hz Quad HD+ display, a Snapdragon 865 processor, up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and it finally supports 30W fast wireless charging.
