COVID-19: New cases jump to 172 today, 92% are non-Malaysians

The number of new COVID-19 cases have jumped to 172 new cases today, which is the first time Malaysia records more than 100 new cases since the CMCO took effect on 4th May. This brings the total number of infections to 7,417.

Fortunately, there are no new deaths recorded and the death toll remains at 115. There are 34 new recoveries recorded today and a total of 5,979 patients have recovered and discharged. The recovery rate has dipped to 80.61% while the mortality rate is now 1.55%.

At the moment, the number of active COVID-19 cases have increased to 1,323 as the number of new cases is 5 times the number of recoveries recorded today.

According to the Ministry of Health, there are 5 imported cases while the remaining 167 were transmitted locally. From the 167 local cases, 159 are non-Malaysians which are mostly from the immigration detention depot.

The ministry has shared that there are a total of 112 new cases from three immigration detention centres – 66 cases at Bukit Jalil depot, 29 at Sepang depot and 17 at Semenyih deposit. A Malaysian that works as an admin staff at the immigration depot has also tested positive for COVID-19.

There are also 44 new cases reported at the Kuala Lumpur construction cluster 2 that consists of 43 non-Malaysians. In addition, there’s also one non-Malaysian that was tested positive from the Sarawak church cluster.

The ministry has urged the public not to worry as the immigration depots are isolated from the community and are controlled by the authorities. At the moment, Malaysia has tested a total of 513,370 individuals and the positive rate is 1.44%. Yesterday, Malaysia has conducted 15,772 tests, which is 57% of the maximum daily capacity from the 45 labs.

The 172 cases reported today is the highest since the 3rd phase of MCO on 15th April. Malaysia recorded its highest daily cases on the 26th of March with 235 cases.
