Samsung has joined the super zoom race when it introduced the Galaxy S20 Ultra. The top-of-the-line flagship boasts 100x Space Zoom that uses a combination of its 108MP main and 48MP telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom. Unfortunately, it seems that this 100x zoom feature will be dropped on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 20.
According to serial leakster Ice Universe, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series will no longer retain the zoom 100x function. This could be due to the autofocus issue which is said to be caused by the camera’s focal length.
What’s interesting is that the Note 20+ is said to be keeping the same Samsung 108MP Bright HM1 image sensor as the Galaxy S20 Ultra. However, it would come with an additional new sensor that will help in focusing.
It is speculated that Samsung may include its latest 50MP ISOCELL GN1 sensor on the upcoming S-Pen equipped flagship that boasts dual-pixel and tetracell technologies. The new sensor promises to offer best-in-class auto-focusing with 100 million phase-detection auto-focus (PDAF) photodiodes. It also offers better low light sensitivity with an effective pixel size of 2.4-microns when it combines four nearby pixels.
However, it still isn’t clear if this new sensor will be used as the telephoto or ultra-wide-angle camera. The Galaxy Note series is usually announced around August, but things may change with the ongoing pandemic.
While having 100x zoom is a cool party trick, most users will prefer to stick within the optical and hybrid zoom range which preserves more details. As a comparison, the latest Huawei P40 Pro+ uses a 50MP f/1.9 main camera with a larger 1/1.28″ sensor and it comes with two 8MP telephoto cameras – one that does 3x optical zoom and another that offers 10x optical zoom. With its camera combo, it is capable of capturing 20x hybrid zoom and it also goes all the way up to 100x in digital zoom.
