Amazfit Ares: Huami’s rugged-looking smartwatch has battery life of up to 90 days

The Huami name is one that has gained traction over the last few years or so, with the company behind some of Xiaomi’s most popular wearables—including the Mi Band 4. Now, the company has announced the latest smartwatch in its Amazfit series: the Amazfit Ares. 

At first glance, the first thing you’ll notice is the rugged-looking exterior of the smartwatch, and the Amazfit Ares bears a striking resemblance to the good ol’ days of the Casio G-Shock. As expected, the new smartwatch comes with a lot of the same strengths that Amazfit series watches have—namely, great battery life and various sports-tracking abilities.

70 sports modes are available for your choosing, ranging from running and swimming  all the way to skiing, snowboarding, and even archery. Perhaps the most unique sports mode that you get is one that tracks various dance styles, including zumba, ballet, and street dance. GPS and GLONASS navigation systems are supported, while the Amazfit Ares is rated at 5ATM for water resistance. 

It also appears that the rugged-looking exterior of the wearable isn’t simply cosmetic. The 1.28” touch colour display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, and the watch itself is made out of polycarbonate (plastic). It’s worth noting that the display isn’t an AMOLED display, unlike many smartwatches in the market today, although that might also play a part in the impressive battery life estimates. 

That comes up to a staggering 90 days of estimated usage in basic watch mode, 14 days in daily use mode, and 23 hours with continuous GPS tracking. However, Amazfit’s smartwatches usually run on the company’s proprietary operating system, which means that support for standalone app installation is probably missing. 

This means that the wearable falls within the “pseudo-smartwatch” category, which basically covers wearables that combine the functionality of fitness bands with the larger displays and bodies of smartwatches. These are all the rage right now, with battery life proving to be a huge plus for the category, along with generally competitive prices.

The Amazfit Ares has only been launched in China, with retail pricing set at CNY499 (~RM305). That’s certainly an affordable price, and rivals will probably include the upcoming Realme Watch, as well as Xiaomi’s own smartwatch (although this is significantly cheaper). We don’t have any confirmed details on when/if the smartwatch is coming to Malaysia, or even on global availability.
