PSA: Grand Theft Auto V is free until 21 May 2020

During my teens, one of the most hotly-discussed video games was Grand Theft Auto—the open-world, violent, and unpredictable nature of the game made for one of the most iconic series in gaming history. And one of the biggest titles in the series, Grand Theft Auto V, is now available for free.

You can download the game on the Epic Games Store until the 21st of May 2020, and the best bit is that you can then keep the game for free (unlike some other limited-play offers). The version you’re getting is also the Premium Edition, which includes the entire story mode, GTA Online, and some added in-game content.

The Premium Edition also offers you a Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack, which will help you get a jump on building your legacy as a… criminal in the game. And let’s be honest—everyone plays GTA as a form as escapism, right? There’s great fun in breaking the (in-game) law, just because you can.

However, it’s worth noting that GTA V only appears to be free for PC gamers. The title was initially launched on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles, before eventually being ported over to the PS4 and PC platforms. This means that console gamers will still have to actually pay (gasp) for the title on those platforms, although you can usually find good deals for the 6-year-old game during sales.

More than 120 million copies have been sold worldwide in the ensuing six years or so since launch, and I fully expect to see those numbers grow—at least, until the 21st of May 2020.

In fact, in the last 24 hours alone, users reported that Epic Games’ online store was down. In all probability, this was caused by the surge in traffic to download the game because… well, it’s free. However, it appears that the site is now back up-and-running, so feel free to head over for your free download. You will, of course, need to register for an account if you haven’t already done so.

Epic Games has been giving away free games as part of its weekly giveaway for awhile now. Every Thursday, a free game gets added into the “Epic Vault”, which is then available to download for free for a limited time—with users keeping the licence to use the game forever.

The videogame company, also known for creating battle royale favourite Fortnite, has been enforcing Two-Factor Authorisation (2FA) for customers who want to access their free games. This protects customers on the platform—gamers often have thousands of Ringgit worth of games and in-game content that are tied to their accounts.
