Yoodo makes a “YooTurn”, continues to offer free 1GB daily

As Malaysia enters the new phase of the Conditional Movement Control Order, Yoodo had announced yesterday a scale-back of its free data offer. Instead of offering free 1GB data passes with 24-hour validity, the digital telco under Celcom had started offering Free 1GB weekly automatically every Monday. Now Yoodo has made a U-Turn and they will continue to offer free 1GB data daily starting today, 14th of May.

According to Yoodo’s post, the free daily 1GB offer will be available until further notice but you have to redeem it manually. To redeem, make sure you’re running on the latest app and activate the pass under “1GB COVID-19 Bonus” on the home screen. The data is valid for 24 hours from the time of activation.

During the early phase of the MCO, Yoodo had begun giving free 1GB weekly. Eventually, they took a step further by automatically crediting free 1GB daily to its active users and you can even accumulate unused data which is valid until the next billing cycle. Since 5th May, users are required to redeem on a daily basis and you can no longer carry forward unused data.

It is understandable that Yoodo has decided to cut back on its free data offer. Malaysian telcos are bearing more cost for the free data initiative than originally intended as the movement control order has been extended several times from the initial 31st March deadline. With Yoodo’s generous offer, there’s very little need for users to purchase more data as the free data isn’t limited to just 8am to 6pm like other providers. Obviously, the initiative will affect their revenue as all you’ll need is to keep your account active even with the cheapest plan option of RM3/month for 50 SMS. The current CMCO has been extended until 9 June 2020.

For more info, you can check out Yoodo’s free data page.
