COVID-19: 67 new cases today, 49 are non-Malaysians

The number of new daily COVID-19 cases in Malaysia has remained in double-digit figures with a total of 67 new cases reported today. This brings the total number of cases to 6,656 and there are no new deaths reported today. The death toll remains at 108.

There are 96 new recoveries today, and a total of 5,025 patients have recovered and discharged. The recovery rate is currently 75.50% while the mortality rate is 1.62%.

At the moment, there are 1,523 active cases remaining. 18 are currently in ICU while 6 cases require respiratory support.

Out of the 67 new cases, 49 are non-Malaysians. Based on the breakdown, there are 45 new cases in Negeri Sembilan, followed by 9 new cases in Kuala Lumpur and 8 new cases in Selangor. There are 2 new cases each in Perak and Pahang, while Sarawak records one new case.

As announced today, Jalan Othman wet market and its surrounding areas of PJ Old Town are placed under enhanced movement control order (EMCO). The decision was made after 26 positive cases were detected in the area to date and it will be enforced until the 23rd of May. According to Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, the EMCO was imposed to facilitate house-to-house contact tracing and residents are prohibited from exiting the designated zone.

Dr Noor Hisham also shared that the Ministry of Health’s targeted approach is showing positive results as it detects new clusters. He urge the public not to be alarmed by the number of new cases as the government is taking an aggressive and proactive approach. All detected cases are isolated and given treatment to ensure that it doesn’t within the community.

In case you missed it, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has announced a four-week extension for the conditional movement control order. It is now scheduled to end on the 7th of June and interstate travel is still not permitted. Although balik kampung trips are not allowed, small gatherings of not more than 20 people will permitted among close neighbours and relatives during the upcoming Hari Raya, Pesta Kaamatan and Hari Gawai celebrations.
