COVID-19: 54 new cases today, 74.81% of cases have recovered in Malaysia

Malaysia continues to record double-digit numbers with 54 new COVID-19 cases today. This brings the total number of cases to 6,589. Unfortunately, there’s one new death recorded today, which brings the current death toll to 108.

65 patients have recovered today, and a total of 4,929 cases have recovered and discharged so far. The current recovery rate is 74.71% while the mortality rate is 1.64%.

Malaysia currently has 1,552 active cases remaining. 18 are currently in ICU while 6 requires respiratory support. Out of 54 new COVID-19 cases recorded in Malaysia today, 1 is an imported case and there are 28 new cases from the Pedas cluster.

The Ministry has also reported a new cluster at a construction site at Setia Alam. 5 foreign workers were tested before they resume work and 3 were found to be positive. The 3 positive cases are Bangladeshi nationals and they share the same accommodation with 18 others.

The source of the infection is still under investigation and authorities are conducting screening on close contacts of the three cases. As of 12pm today, a total of 28 people were tested. 12 of them were found to be positive, 9 were negative and the remaining 7 individuals are still waiting for results.

Apart from the Pedas and Setia Alam construction site clusters, there are 2 new cases each from the Kuching healthcare worker cluster, Chow Kit market cluster, Kuala Lumpur construction site cluster and Cheras security guard cluster.

Rembau now a Red Zone

The number of red zones has increased to 11 as of 12pm, 8th of May. The district of Rembau is now a red zone after a surge of new cases from the Pedas factory cluster in Negeri Sembilan. At the moment, the Pedas cluster has a total of 88 cases and 81 of them are non-Malaysians from Nepal, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Myanmar. The source of the infection is still under investigation.

Meanwhile, there are 77 yellow zones and a total of 113 green zones. The northern states of Perak, Pulau Pinang, Perlis, Kedah and Kelantan are currently green statewide.

The health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah didn’t provide a live press conference today as he’s taking a break. However, his ministry continues to provide the latest COVID-19 updates through official channels. The daily press conference will resume tomorrow.
