DxOMark crowns Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra king of single-camera selfie

The latest Samsung flagships have bucked the trend of putting more cameras on the front. Unlike the S10+ which came with a dual-selfie-camera setup, the Galaxy S20 Ultra just comes with a single punch-hole camera on the display which pushes a high 40MP resolution. The folks at DxOMark have given the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra a selfie camera score of 100, which is the 2nd highest on their list.

According to DxOMark, the Galaxy S20 Ultra scored 104 points for photo and 95 points for video. With an overall score of 100, is it shares the second spot as the dual-cam Huawei Nova 6 5G and it’s 3 points behind the Huawei P40 Pro which also comes with a dual-cam selfie setup.

In terms of the rear camera setup, DxOMark had recently given the S20 Ultra a score of 122 which is below the Huawei P40 Pro, Oppo Find X2 Pro and the Mi 10 Pro.

In their findings, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is a good choice for selfie enthusiasts and it deserves the second-place ranking in its selfie database. They said that the 40MP quad-bayer sensor doesn’t necessarily lead to a vast improvement in image quality over the Note 10+ 5G but the S20 Ultra demonstrated interesting innovation from a single camera with its dual focal length capability through image cropping.

The 40MP selfie shooter uses a 1/2.65″ sensor that supports 2×2 pixel binning to produce 10MP images with 25mm-equivalent focal length. In cropped mode, it produces a smaller 6.5MP image with a longer 32mm-equivalent focal length for single-person selfies.

They added that the selfie camera produces good exposure, wide dynamic range, pleasant bokeh, low noise and reliable autofocus with sharp faces at different distances. However, they also noted white balance casts in almost all lighting conditions and there are visible noise when the flash is used. While videos on the selfie cam offer accurate exposure, vivid colours and high details, they reported autofocus instabilities and refocusing in all conditions.
