Wait, is this a “new” Huawei smartphone with Google Mobile Services?

Before we proceed any further, let’s have a quick recap of Huawei‘s relationship with Google. First, the Chinese company ran into some issues with the U.S. Department of Commerce, which led to a ban on any dealings between Huawei and American companies—including Google.

Fast-forward a couple of months, and most new Huawei smartphones are running on an open-source version of Android, utilising Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) instead of Google Mobile Services.

Flagship devices like the Huawei Mate 30 Pro and even the foldable Huawei Mate Xs have been launched without Google’s framework services, and the reliance on HMS looks set to continue for the foreseeable future.

Well, with a few exceptions.

Huawei P30 Pro “New Edition”

According to a promotional statement on Huawei’s German site, it looks like the company is set to launch yet another refresh of the 2019 flagship: the Huawei P30 Pro. This is the second re-release of the device after the launch of a dual-tone P30 Pro for selected markets.

What’s interesting is that because the “New Edition” of the Huawei P30 Pro isn’t technically new, the device could come loaded with Google apps and services. The original launch of the Huawei P30 Pro, of course, came before the fallout with the U.S. government.

This appears to be a loophole of sorts that the Chinese company has discovered, where “new” versions of older, previously Google-certified devices are released with some minor tweaks. We’ve already seen this on the Huawei P30 Lite, as well as older Huawei smartphones last year such as the Huawei Nova 5T.

It’s worth mentioning that Huawei Germany has not confirmed that the device will have GMS. Rather, this is a calculated guess based on the company’s previous phone (re)releases.

There are also no confirmed details for the “New Edition”, but it’s safe to assume that we’ll be seeing the same Kirin 980 chipset and Leica quad camera setup. Given that the current Huawei P30 Pro has/is getting support for EMUI 10.1 based on Android 10, perhaps the new P30 Pro will come with Android 10 out of the box.

Meanwhile, the device could also feature new colour options, along with storage, RAM, and other upgrades. We’ll just have to wait and see. What do you think? Are you keen to pick up a Huawei smartphone with GMS? Let us know in the comments section below.
