COVID-19: Malaysia records 88 new cases today, 64% have recovered

The Ministry of Health has provided another daily update with the number of recoveries exceeding new COVID-19 cases in Malaysia. As of 4pm today, there are 88 new cases which is the highest since 16th April. This brings the total number of infections to 5,691.

Out of the 88 cases, 39 positive cases are from Selangor Mansion. This brings the total number of cases at the EMCO area to 146. Meanwhile, 15 new cases are from Kg. Sungai Lui, Selangor.

Unfortunately, there’s one death reported today which brings the overall death toll to 96. On the positive side, there are 121 new recoveries today and 3,663 of the total cases have recovered and discharged so far.

The current recovery rate is 64.36% while the mortality rate is 1.69%. At the moment, 1,932 cases are still receiving treatment.

According to Health director-general Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, the number of cases that need ICU and respiratory support has also declined. 41 are currently in ICU while 18 are requiring respiratory support.

The health D-G also expressed support for the government’s decision to extend the movement control order. He added that this would allow health authorities to continue and expand existing efforts to contain the disease.

Looking at the trend, today marks 8 consecutive days with double-digit daily cases which is an encouraging sign. However, we are not out of the woods yet. As highlighted by Dr Noor Hisham, Malaysia would need to fulfil 6 criteria before the MCO can be lifted. Malaysia can start to consider lifting once the number of new daily COVID-19 cases falls within the single-digit range.
