Malaysia has recorded 57 new COVID-19 cases today which brings the total number of cases to 5,482. Unfortunately, there are 3 new deaths recorded, which brings the death toll to 92.
The Ministry of Health has also recorded 54 new recoveries and there are now a total of 3,349 cases that have recovered and discharged. At the moment, the recovery rate is 61.09% while the mortality rate is 1.68%.
There are 2,041 cases still receiving treatment and 43 are currently in ICU with 27 requiring respiratory support. Today marks 5 consecutive days with less than 100 new daily cases reported.
According to the Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the Ministry of Health aims to reduce the number of daily cases to single-digit with the cooperation of all parties during the movement control order. The movement control order is tentatively scheduled to end on the 28th April 2020.
Among the 57 new cases today, 18 cases are imported by returning Malaysians, while 39 cases are locally transmitted. Since 3rd April, 12,160 Malaysians coming from overseas were required to undergo mandatory quarantine. Out of the 95 positive cases that were imported by returning Malaysians, 68 are from Indonesia, 12 from the UK, 5 from Singapore, 4 from Turkey, 3 from the Netherlands, 2 from the United States and 1 from France.
As highlighted by the Senior Minister, Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob, the compulsory quarantine was a lifesaver as it has helped to curb the spread of COVID-19 by returning Malaysians to their immediate family members at home. Previously, returning Malaysians were allowed to self-isolate at home but they are now required to undergo 14-days quarantine at designated hotels.
