New update for the Nintendo Switch lets you transfer downloaded games to SD card

Nintendo Switch’s new 10.0.0 firmware update includes several new features. The biggest update lets you transfer your downloaded games directly from system memory to an SD card, or vice versa, to free up storage.

Previously, if you filled up your internal storage and you wanted to offload games and updates to a seperete SD card, your only option was to re-download them. Transferring data directly between the console’s internal and external memory should make it much quicker and more convenient.

If you own a Switch, the new update should automatically download when it’s connected online. Here’s how to check to see if you currently are updated:

  • Go to your ‘System Settings’
  • Go to ‘System’
  • Take a look at what the current version is beneath ‘System Update’
  • You should already have 10.0.0, but if it doesn’t say that, just press ‘System Update’ to update your system

There is also a new button remapping feature, which lets you customise different Joy-Con button layouts for different games for up to five presets. Here’s how to remap your controllers:

  • Go to your ‘System Settings’
  • Go to ‘Controllers and Sensors’
  • Choose the ‘Change Button Mapping’ section, which should be beneath ‘Change Grip Order’
  • Pick the Joy-Con you want to start with, then choose ‘Change’
  • You can start remapping your Joy-Con buttons

There is also a small but exciting update for Animal Crossing fans. You can also update your user profile picture with an updated selection of Animal Crossing: New Horizons characters’ images.

To update your user profile to a picture of your favourite Animal Crossing character (Mine’s Blathers!), here’s what you need to do:

  • Go to your current user profile page (on the far upper left corner)
  • In ‘Profile’, select your current display picture
  • Select ‘Character/Mii’
  • You can find 18 Animal Crossing: New Horizons characters to choose from, 6 are completely new!
