Have you noticed a change in how Google Lens looks?

Back in 2017, Google Lens was announced as an AI-based way for users to “search what you see”, with functions like real-time text translations, real-life image search, as well as identification of plants and animals via your camera/photos. When first announced, we saw a rectangular-shaped logo for the app, although the actual result (when the app was released) was a little bit more square-ish.

That square-ish graphic was the default logo for Google Lens for awhile, before being replaced in 2019 by the current icon—the one with the blue dot surrounded by red, yellow, and blue borders. There’s also a small green dot at the corner of the icon, which appears to be the “flash” in the Google “Lens”. However, the logo appears as a grayscale icon when appearing within Google’s Assistant and Photos apps.

Now, 9to5Mac is reporting that there is a new icon for Google Lens—although only certain users have received the update, apparently.

Have a look:

The icon has only been seen within the Google Photos app thus far, which indicates that the new logo is being trialled by Google before a potential wide release is rolled out. The update isn’t all that drastic, and you might need to look fairly closely to tell the difference.

Basically, the blue dot (white in images above within Google apps) has been replaced by a G (for Google, of course), while the “flash” dot at the bottom-right of the logo has been replaced by another border.

While the distinction may not be that great ,this could be part of a move on Google’s part to further solidify the branding of its suite of native apps. The current/previous logo, in its black-and-white state within other Google apps, do not quite scream “GOOGLE” as much as a G would.

And with Google Photos available (either pre-installed or via the Play Store) on most Android smartphones, it makes sense for Google to look for a little more brand recognition. In the Google Photos app, for example, the Lens icon sits in a row alongside buttons for sharing, deleting, and editing—all very generic-looking icons.

However, I have not received the icon on any of my Android devices at the time of writing. Have you spotted the update on any of your smartphones/tablets yet? Let us know in the comment section below.
