This may sound weird but I miss working in an office. Working from home during the Movement Control Order (MCO) can have its benefits but there’s nothing like the white noise you hear from keyboard tapping, to the occasional chatter, to the sound of someone accidentally making a squeaking sound with a chair.
Fortunately, Kids Creative Agency created a website called imisstheoffice.eu which replicates the sounds of being in the office, without actually being back there. The also not only generates very realistic in-office sounds, but you can tweak little details of what sounds you prefer by clicking on very adorable moving graphics.
Once you’ve reached the website, you’ll notice an “office” with moving coloured shapes that represent “colleagues”. Press the ‘play’ button on the bottom left to start listening. You can even change the number of colleagues on the bottom right. It only goes up to 10, but seeing as it looks like a small office you won’t need so many to feel like there’s enough people around you.
The office layout lets you click around to activate certain sounds. Clicking the water cooler can trigger the sound of water filling up a cup. Clicking the printer activates the blaring noise of a printer. You can even activate the sounds of a ping-pong match and keyboard tapping.
Leaving the site on as background noise while you work, you can also hear random sounds as time passes like sneezing, laughing, and even loud chewing, which annoyed me so much I had to go back to the site to try and switch the sound off, only to have the chewing sound stop on its own.
If you’re keen to try it yourself and experiment on your perfect combo of office white noise, be my guest, and let me know if this satisfied any urges you might have had while working from home.
