For the first time since the Movement Control Order was imposed, Malaysia has recorded more COVID-19 recoveries than new cases in a single day. There are 236 new recoveries today which is a record high and it brings the number of recoveries to 1,241.
Meanwhile, there are 131 new cases today, which the lowest since 31st March 2020. Overall, there are now a total of 3,793 cases with 2,490 cases still undergoing treatment. 102 are in ICU with 53 requiring respiratory support. Unfortunately, there’s one new death recorded, bringing the death toll to 62.
The new record recoveries and the fact that it exceeds the number of new cases is an early indication that the MCO is effective in containing the spread of COVID-19 in Malaysia. Looking at the full numbers, Malaysia has a recovery rate of 32.72%, while the death rate is 1.63%.
According to Health Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the two biggest COVID-19 clusters after the Sri Petaling tabligh is a 3-day church seminar in Kuching and a wedding reception in Bandar Baru Bangi.
The Kuching cluster has recorded a total of 83 cases. Out of this figure, two have died, 5 are currently in critical condition in ICU, 50 are being treated in hospitals while 25 are under observation in quarantine centres. One case from the cluster has fully recovered and discharged.
Meanwhile, the Bangi cluster has infected people across 5 generations. There are 88 positive cases with one currently being treated in ICU. So far there are no deaths reported.
According to Dr Noor Hisham, the spread of the pandemic from both Kuching and Bangi clusters have since been contained and they don’t expect to see new cases from them. The Ministry of Health will decide on 10th April if the current MCO which is tentatively scheduled to end on 14th April is required to be extended.
