OnePlus 8 to launch on 14 April, here’s what we know so far

It’s official: the brand new OnePlus 8 series will be launched on the 14th of April, with 3 possible variants to be released: the flagship OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 8, along with a rumoured entry level model called the OnePlus Z (also referred to as the OnePlus 8 Lite). As expected, the launch will be broadcast globally via livestream, which you can catch on the official launch site, along with OnePlus’ YouTube channel.

OnePlus has already confirmed that all variants in the latest series will feature 5G connectivity, while we’ll also be seeing a new 120Hz Fluid Display. That’s an expected development, with the OnePlus 7T and 7 series already featuring 90Hz displays—with many competitors pushing 120Hz displays on their flagships, this is a natural move from the Chinese company.

But beyond official details, we’ve also had leaks from reliable sources that offer a peek into the new OnePlus device. We’re expecting to see a departure from that (frankly) weird circular camera module on the 7T, while both the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro should be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 865, along with an X55 5G modem.

OnePlus also joined the Wireless Consortium last year, offering a clue that the company plans to bring in wireless charging support on its smartphones—for the first time ever. Rumours indicate that the 8 Pro will be water resistant at IP68, while 30W wireless fast charging and reverse wireless charging might be a possibility.

The “lower-end” OnePlus 8 has also been seen in marketing renders in three colours: a green variant that looks similar to the 7T Pro, a black option, and a really interesting “glow” colour option that looks like a rainbow palette of sorts.

But the biggest design change of all might be a new hole-punch cutout, in place of the traditional notch on the OnePlus 7T. The 7T Pro, if you’ve forgotten, utilises a pop-up camera for selfies, but OnePlus appears to now be moving towards the cutout option instead (like the rest of the smartphone maker club). Both the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro will look pretty similar, based on a combination of renders, as well as a quickly-uploaded-then-deleted “candid” shot of OnePlus ambassador Robert Downing Jr. holding the purported OP8 Pro.

We don’t have details regarding official pricing yet, but keep your browser bookmarked on SoyaCincau for updates on this. For now, you’ll be able to catch the stream at 11pm, Malaysian time, on the 14th of April 2020.
