Here’s why the Samsung Galaxy S20’s night mode is such an underrated feature

This post is brought to you by Samsung.

Samsung’s latest flagship series, the Galaxy S20, was only recently launched in Malaysia, with 3 models—the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra—all available at different price points to cater to a diverse market. Something that is clearly a focus for the Korean company, when it comes to the S20, is the photography aspect of the device. There’s the 108MP camera on the headlining variant, the S20 Ultra, while there’s also the much-vaunted Space Zoom, which offers up to 100X zoom.

All of the variants within the series are capable of 8K video recording—the Galaxy S20 and S20+ comes with a 12MP main camera, a 64MP telephoto lens, and a 12MP ultra-wide angle shooter , along with a DepthVision sensor. But the top-of-the-line Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G probably has the most impressive camera setup of the lot: a quad camera setup that’s comprised of a 108MP main camera, 48MP telephoto lens, 12MP ultra-wide angle and a DepthVision sensor.

Another ace up the S20’s sleeve is Bright Night, Samsung’s advanced Night mode for low-light photographs. Most, if not all, of us use our smartphones to take photos, and we all know that low-light environments can be challenging to photograph. Resulting images can also be grainy, blurred, and generally unusable.

But that’s something that Samsung is working to overcome.

So, how does Bright Night work?

Samsung says that images taken with the Galaxy S20 are improved—even in low light. This is down to the larger image sensor, which means that even low-light photos captured using the smartphone’s default camera mode are improved.

And of course, there is Night mode, known as Super Bright Night on the S20 and S20+ and Ultra Bright Night on the range-topping Galaxy S20 Ultra. The way it works, multi-frame processing is used to combine 30 images into one resulting photo which is enhanced by the S20’s camera sensors.

Additionally, multi-ISO composition also helps to remove the motion blur that you’d normally get with low-light, and there’s also the implementation of nona-binning technology; this tech also helps to provide better results in low-light environments by merging nine pixels into one, so that the 108MP sensor provides a 12MP photo. These larger pixels are then able to capture more light—which results in good low light photos.

Capture What Matters

The Galaxy S20’s camera setup is arguably the most powerful Galaxy camera yet, with hardware coupled with AI-powered software on all three variants. And every aspect of the setup has clearly been designed with its users in mind—the 108MP lens, the 100x Space Zoom, and so on.

But the Bright Night feature on the Galaxy S20 is an underrated feature, if you ask me. In the fast-moving world we live in, opportunities to capture moments can be fleeting in nature, and having a versatile, powerful camera setup is essential.

If you’re interested in purchasing a Samsung Galaxy S20, official pricing in Malaysia is as follows:
