Redmi Note 9 is launching in Malaysia next week but it’s not the Pro Max

Xiaomi’s latest Redmi Note 9 series is coming to Malaysia on the 23rd of March 2020. The new mid-range series is expected to come with a huge display and a huge battery, however, it looks like we won’t be getting the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Note 9 Pro Max that were introduced in India.

According to Xiaomi Malaysia’s teaser, the upcoming device for our local market will be introduced as the Redmi Note 9S. That’s quite an odd naming but the image also confirms that it will come with a quad-camera setup arranged in a “Huawei Mate 20” inspired camera bump.

The device has already passed our SIRIM certification and it is a dual-SIM device that supports 4G LTE. There’s also support for 802.11ac WiFi but it lacks NFC support, which is currently offered on the Redmi Note 8 Pro.

The question right now is what specs will the Redmi Note 9S have? Will it be similar to the Redmi Note 9 Pro or the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max? Both devices are actually quite identical except for the camera specs, RAM + storage configuration and the type of charger provided.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, it is likely that Xiaomi Malaysia will reveal the Redmi Note 9S through a live stream event. Pre-order is expected to begin shortly after the event via its official online stores.

Redmi Note 9 Pro and Note 9 Pro Max

Both Redmi Note 9 models in India feature a 6.67″ Full HD+ display and they run on a Snapdragon 720G processor. For the Pro Max, it gets a 64MP f/1.89 main camera with a large 1/1.7″ sensor, while the Pro has a lower resolution 48MP main shooter with a smaller 1/2.25″ sensor. The three cameras are the same for both models, with an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 5MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor.

For selfies, the Note 9 Pro Max has a higher resolution 32MP front camera, while the Pro has a 16MP front shooter. The mid-range duo also comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as an IR blaster which could be utilised as a universal remote. Also included is a dedicated microSD card slot.

The devices come with a large 5,020mAh battery that charges via USB-C. The “Max” gets a 33W fast charger while the standard model settles for an 18W charging brick.

In India, the Redmi Note 9 Pro is priced from INR 12,999 (about RM752) for the 4GB RAM + 64GB storage model, while the Pro Max is priced from INR 14,999 (about RM868) for the 6GB RAM + 64GB storage variant.

If you’re looking for a flagship device, the Xiaomi Mi 10 that’s powered by a Snapdragon 865 will be launched internationally on the 27th of March 2020. The device has already passed SIRIM, so it could go on sale soon.
