First, we had 90Hz displays. Then, smartphone makers started including 120Hz displays on their devices. And now—when most of us are just starting to adjust to the idea (and battery drain) of high refresh rate displays on smartphones—Nubia has just launched the first phone with a 144Hz display: the Nubia Red Magic 5G.
On paper, the Red Magic 5G is possibly one of the most spec-heavy phones in the market today. The latest and greatest SoC from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 865, powers the device, while you have memory configurations of up to 16GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS3.0 storage. And as per its name, dual-mode 5G connectivity is supported.
For gamers, the Red Magic 5G also features an “active” cooling solution, which means that there is an actual cooling fan inside the phone. There’s an exit vent on the right edge of the phone, with the intake on the opposite end. There is also a heat-sink chamber, which Nubia claims to reduce the temperature of the CPU by up to 18°C.
It’s a pretty big display on the Red Magic 5G: a Full HD+ 6.65-inch AMOLED panel, with an 8MP selfie camera located on the top bezel of the device. And no, there is no punch-hole cutout, or even a notch—which is ideal for gamers. Speaking of gamers, the 144Hz refresh rate is the first time we’ve seen such a high refresh rate display on a smartphone, while there is also 240Hz touch-sensing for input latency.
Additionally, the Nubia’s new flagship also comes with support for WiFi 6, as well as a headphone jack—imagine that, on a 2020 flagship device. Despite the emergence of low-latency wireless headphones, gamers still prefer the security of wired headphones.
If you want to make it pointedly obvious that you’re using a gaming phone, the Red Magic 5G also features an RGB light panel—fantastic. There are also capacitive shoulder triggers which have a sampling rate of 300Hz, which should theoretically mean less touch input latency for the triggers. Camera-wise, there is a 64MP Sony IMX686 main camera, along with an 8MP ultra-wide shooter and a 2MP macro lens.
There will be 3 colours available: Black, Mars Red, and Cyber Neon, as well as a limited Transparent Edition. The Nubia Red Magic 5G will be available in China on the 12th of March 2020, with global availability confirmed for April 2020. Details are as follows:
