Google’s biggest event of the year, I/O 2020 has been cancelled due to the current coronavirus outbreak. Scheduled to take place on the 12th to 14th of May 2020 at Mountain View, California, the event is Google’s venue to showcase its latest products and innovation including the upcoming Android 11.
According to Google’s statement, they have decided to cancel its physical Google I/O event due to concerns around COVID-19 and in accordance with health guidance from the CDC, WHO and other health authorities. Ticket holders for the event will be refunded by 13th March 2020.
For those that have successfully registered for Google I/O 2020 will not be required to enter next year’s drawing and they will be automatically be granted to purchase next year’s ticket. Google will explore new ways to evolve the event and it is likely that they will proceed with a live stream event.
Two weeks ago, Google had opened its registration for I/O with a ticket price that starts from USD 375 (about RM1,585) for students and USD 1,150 (about RM4,845) for general admission. Participants were picked via a drawing process and submissions were closed on 25th February 2020.
At the moment, the United States has recorded over 100 confirmed Covid-19 cases with 4 deaths reported so car. Globally, there are now more than 90,000 cases with 3,085 deaths reported so far.
In Malaysia, the number of cases had jumped to 36 after 7 new cases were reported yesterday. So far 22 have recovered while 14 are still receiving treatment.
