The Malaysian Immigration Department has announced the suspension of all Autogate and E-gate systems at all entry-points in the country. This is to help contain the spread of COVID-19 in Malaysia.
The suspension takes effect immediately and it covers the Autogate for Malaysian citizens, E-Gate for foreigners using the National Enforcement and Registration Biometric System (NERS) and E-Gate Malaysian Automated Clearance System (MACS).
According to the Immigration director-general Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud, the suspension would not affect tourist arrivals. He added that the purpose of the move is to ensure stricter control in dealing with the spread of COVID-19 and the Immigration Department will work closely with the Health Ministry. It appears that the authorities are stepping up health screenings at all border checkpoints.
As of today, there are a total of 50 COVID-19 cases in Malaysia with 22 cases recovered so far. The latest 21 cases were linked to Case 26 through close contact. At the moment, there are zero deaths recorded due to COVID-19 in Malaysia.
