The Samsung Galaxy S20 series has just been launched at the Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event, with a couple of notable changes. For starters, the Korean smartphone maker jumped a couple of numbers in the series and unveiled the Galaxy S20, along with the S20+, and a new S20 Ultra. Something else that Samsung is highlighting is the camera capabilities of the new flagships—especially the 8K recording capabilities of all 3 models.
And to further demonstrate the capabilities of the camera setup, with the range-topping Galaxy S20 Ultra featuring a quad-camera module comprising a 108MP main camera, a 48MP telephoto lens, and a 12MP ultra-wide angle shooter, and a DepthVision sensor, Samsung arguably went one step further than Apple has done with their “Shot on iPhone” videos.
They shot and live-streamed the entire Unpacked 2020 event using the Galaxy S20 series. I’m guessing that they used the S20 Ultra, and it also looks like the phone was used with a special mounts—which explains the “additional hardware and editing equipment used”. Not that’s a problem, to be fair.
The event was live-streamed at 1080p resolution on YouTube, and the highlights are also available in Full HD:
For me, the impressive bit of all of this isn’t really just the quality of the entire production. It’s more to do with the fact that Samsung actually shot their biggest global event of the year with a smartphone—and live-streamed it. Of course, the fact that the “Shot on iPhone” videos do a little more to demonstrate the cinematic qualities of the iPhone’s camera, but Samsung’s move displayed some real guts.
To recap Samsung’s flagship S20 Ultra’s specs for the Malaysian market, it has a 40MP front-facing camera that supports 4K video recording in addition to the quad camera setup, while the S20 Ultra comes with a huge 5,000mAh battery. All 3 models are powered by an Exynos 990 chipset, with the S20 Ultra having 12GB of memory. Unfortunately, only 1 configuration for the 3 models are available: 128GB.
