5G is rolling out in our market in Q3 2020 and the first certified 5G smartphone in Malaysia is finally going on sale this week. Huawei Malaysia has announced the availability of the Mate 30 Pro 5G which is the dual-mode 5G variant of its current top of the line flagship smartphone.

Pricing and availability

Only one variant is available and it’s going on sale starting 7th February 2020. The device is only offered in orange which comes with a Vegan Leather texture for its back.

According to Huawei, the Mate 30 Pro 5G will also be available on contract via Maxis, Celcom and U Mobile on 7th February, and it will also be offered on Digi at a later date. As a launch promo, Huawei is offering RM537 worth of gifts which include a Huawei Wireless In-Car SuperCharge charger and Huawei Care which provides 1-year extended warranty.

As a comparison, the current Mate 30 Pro 4G version is going for RM3,899 and it comes with 8GB RAM + 256GB of storage.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G specs

The Mate 30 Pro 5G is powered by a Kirin 990 5G SoC which is manufactured based on a 7nm+ EUV process. It comes with an integrated 5G modem which supports both SA and NSA networks including Malaysia’s 700MHz and 3500MHz bands. For better reception, Huawei boasts a total of 21 antennas which include 14 5G antennas to ensure a high-speed and stable 5G connection.

Apart from supporting 5G, the Kirin 990 5G SoC is different from the standard Kirin 990 SoC. It has a higher-clocked middle-core CPU and a more powerful dual-core NPU for better AI-oriented processing.

The rest of of the device is similar to the 4G version of the Mate 30 Pro. It still has a 6.53″ Full HD+ OLED display, a quad-camera setup with a 40MP main camera, 40MP ultra-wide-angle shooter, 8MP telephoto unit and a 3D ToF camera. For selfies, it gets a 32MP front camera. Powering the device is a 4,500mAh battery which supports 40W Huawei SuperCharge via USB-C. Out of the box, it runs on EMUI 10 that’s based on Android 10. However, do note that it doesn’t come with Google Mobile Services pre-installed as it is shipped with Huawei Mobile Services.
