Poco X2: Most affordable phone with 120Hz display and 64MP camera?

Pocophone is finally making a comeback and their next device will be announced next week, on the 4th of February 2020. After introducing the Pocophone F1 back in 2018, its next device is the Poco X2 which promises to be Smooth AF.

Pocophone (or known as just Poco in India) didn’t reveal why their upcoming device is called the X2 instead of F2. To pique your interest, they have released a mobile teaser site that provided a couple of hints of its key features. Firstly, the Poco X2 boasts a higher display refresh rate that’s great for gaming and it will be running on a Qualcomm processor. The device also comes with a liquid cooling heatpipe which is similar to its predecessor.

If you access the site with your smartphone, it will show a different message depending on your screen’s refresh rate. If your device pushes 90Hz or 60Hz, it will make fun of you for having a disappointing screen. On a 120Hz device, the site will imply that you’re spending too much money on your smartphone.

Another hint is that the device is using a Sony IMX686 sensor which pushes a high 64MP resolution. As you would expect, the Poco F2 will also support fast wired charging and the good news is that it still retains a 3.5mm headphone jack as shown below.

From the looks of it, this could be the global version of the Redmi K30 that’s sold in China. Even the image for fast charging looks identical to Xiaomi’s Redmi K30 product page as shown below. To keep the price low, the X2 could be based on the Redmi K30 4G version and you can also consider this as a successor to the Xiaomi Mi 9T.

To recap, the Redmi K30 comes with a 6.67″ Full HD+ 120Hz LCD punch-hole display that comes with a 20MP + 2MP dual-selfie camera setup on the top right corner. It runs on a Snapdragon 730G processor that can be configured with up to 8GB RAM and up to 256GB of storage.

The K30 comes with a quad-camera setup featuring a 64MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 2MP macro shooter and a 2MP depth sensor. Powering the device is a generous 4,500mAh battery and it supports 27W fast charging via USB-C. For the K30 with 5G, it runs on a Snapdragon 765G processor and it supports 30W fast charging.

In China, the Redmi K30 base model with 6GB RAM + 64GB storage is priced at CNY 1,599 (about RM941). As a comparison, the Pocophone F1 that comes with a Snapdragon 845 processor with 6GB RAM + 64GB storage was launched in Malaysia at RM1,237. There’s still a possibility that the Poco X2 might feature a flagship-class processor as there are rumours of a Redmi K30 Pro that is powered by a Snapdragon 865.

Assuming the Poco X2 is going for less than RM1,200, is this still a value buy if it doesn’t run on a Snapdragon 855 or 865? Let us know in the comments below.
