What happens when you enter 888 into the search bar on Netflix?

We’re in the midst of the festivities for the Chinese New Year, and a large part of the celebrations are Lunar New Year-themed movies that you can sit down with the family to enjoy. In the past, most of us would have the TV on, at the mercy of what broadcasters decide to show—usually, festive-themed content. Now, Netflix has announced that they are compiling a collection of classic Chinese New Year favourites, along with popular Chinese series and movies.

The selection is available exclusively in Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Vietnam until the 8th of February, with classics such as Stephen Chow’s Flirting Scholar, Fight Back to School series, Kung Fu Hustle, and King of Beggars available. Additionally, you can also watch the Police Story series starring Jackie Chan, as well as Lydia Shum’s It’s a Mad Mad World series.

It’s also a really simple process if you want to access the selection. Search for “888” into the search bar, and you’ll have the full list of movies and series. According to Jerry Zhang, Manager of Content Acquisition, Netflix:

“Lunar New Year is a time of celebration and getting together with friends and families. We are excited to curate this collection to make it easier for members to discover and enjoy our growing library of Chinese-language films and shows, from perennial and evergreen Lunar New Year favourites, to award-winning films as well as original shows. Whether with the whole family, during commutes from one household to another, or alone, we want Netflix to be the go-to destination for finding the best shows and films to enjoy during this festive holiday.”

Here’s a list of some of the movies that Netflix is recommending—remember to add your favourites into “My List” so that you have easy access when it’s time to put on a Chinese New Year classic at home this year:

  • A Sun (launching on Jan 24)
  • Cities of Last Things
  • Handsome Siblings
  • Mayday Life
  • Nowhere Man
  • The 9th Precinct
  • The Ghost Bride (launching on Jan 23)
  • The Wandering Earth
  • Triad Princess
  • Yanxi Palace: Princess Adventures

And here are some of the classics:

  • A Better Tomorrow series
  • The Accidental Spy
  • A Chinese Odyssey
  • The Conman
  • Double Fattiness
  • Fat Choi Spirit
  • Fight Back to School series
  • Flirting Scholar
  • Fly Me to Polaris
  • Future Cops
  • Initial D
  • Ip Man series
  • It’s a Mad Mad World series
  • Look Out, Officer!
  • Love on Delivery
  • Kungfu Hustle
  • Once Upon a Time in China series
  • Para Para Sakura
  • Police Story series
  • The Romancing Star series
  • The Storm Riders
  • Tokyo Raiders

It’s worth noting that Netflix doesn’t have a presence in China at the present, although the on-demand giant is growing its Chinese-language content. Towards the tail-end of 2019, the company also announced its first Chinese-language original programmes: Nowhere Man, Triad Princess, and The Ghost Bride.

All three are available to view (and more, in the list above). Do you think Netflix is missing any must-haves in the list above? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
